April Meeting

Reminder: The next regular meeting of The Stormy Petrels of BC will take place on April 6, 2010 at 7:00 pm.

The story for discussion will be The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire”

Holmes: “What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in the grave by stakes driven through their hearts?”

The story was first published in January 1924 in the Strand Magazine an in NY’s Hearst Magazine. Written during ACD’s years as an advocate of spiritualism.

Why did Holmes refer to “this Agency”?

Holmes: “Was there not a Queen in English history who sucked a wound to draw poison from it?”

What did Matilda Briggs have to do with the Giant Rat of Sumatra?

Find out the answers to these questions and more at the next meeting.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Oscar Wilde Commemorated at the Langham, London

Many thanks to Roger Johnson of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London for the following notice:

A plaque will be unveiled at the Langham on March 19th, 2010. It reads:

Oscar Wilde and Arthur Conan Doyle dined here with the publisher of Lippincott’s Magazine on 30 August 1889, a meeting that led to The Sign of Four & The Picture of Dorian Gray”

Both stories were published in Lippincott’s, a Philadelphia-based magazine, in 1890.

Also from Roger Johnson: There are plans to convert “Undershaw”, ACD’s home at Hindhead, into flats. Please go to http://undershawhelp.blogspot.com for updated information and what you can do to prevent this.

Re: Vampires

“Rubbish, Watson, rubbush! What have we to do with walking corpses who can only be held in their grave by stakes driven through their hearts?”

The adventure for discussion at the next meeting of the Stormy Petrels of BC will be “The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire”

The meeting will take place chez Wood at 7:00 pm on April 6, 2010.

“This Agency stands flatfooted upon the ground….No ghosts need apply.”

If you are interested in joining the Petrels as they sink their teeth into this knotty probelm, please contact the ‘Consulting Detective’ for more details at: stormypetrels@gmail.com

Our 22nd annual dinner proved to be a great success. Many thanks to all who provided food, and many thanks to Elsa and Audrey for all their organizing. Thank you to the Woods for hosting this event. A wonderful time was had by all!

March Dinner 2010

“We are, as usual, the irregulars, and we must take our own line of action.” (LADY)

Due to an “Olympic” event taking place in Vancouver, the regular monthly meeting of the Stormy Petrels has been canceled.

Unfortunately, the “Masters’ Dinner” has also suffered due to the afore-mentioned “Olympic” event, since the venue site will be required for other matters.

The Petrels, being a hardy bunch and never willing to accept any defeat, we have come up with an alternative.

The 22nd Annual Masters’ dinner will go ahead with a pot-luck and less formal atmosphere than prior years. Members will be contacted by Gloria Scott and Mrs. Hudson as to the menu.

The dinner will take place as usual chez Wood starting at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, March 2nd.

“Chance has put in our way a most singular and whimsical problem, and its solution is its own reward.” (BLUE)
