FEBRUARY MEETING

Our Sherlock Holmes Birthday Luncheon was another great success, with 17 members and guests in attendance.

Our special guest speaker was Mr. Erik Swanick of Special Collections at SFU (Simon Fraser University) Library. Several of our members have already donated material to this collection.

The Stormy Petrels will meet on Feb. 2, 2010 chez Wood at 7:00 p.m.

The case for discussion will be “The Adventure of the Three Gables”.
“I don’t think that any of my adventures with Mr. Sherlock Holmes opened quite so abruptly, or so dramatically, as that which I associate with The Three Gables.”

Happy Birthday, Sherlock Holmes!

On January 9, 2010, the Stormy Petrels will honour the great detective by hosting a birthday celebration.

He called himself “middle-aged” about 1889, and was described as being 60 years old in 1914, suggesting a birth date of c. 1854.

The third annual Birthday luncheon will be held at The White Spot (West Georgia/Cardero) at 11:15. It is an informal luncheon, although we may have a guest speaker.

For the previous twenty years, the Petrels have celebrated this day with a more formal dinner. The dinner now takes place in March, and detail will be available at a later date. This dinner celebrates the birth of a great partnership – Holmes and Watson – at which both men are honoured.

Please let Fran know if you are able to attend.

Movie Review

The Stormy Petrels of BC received coverage in the Vancouver Sun on Christmas Eve in an article re the Guy Ritchie Sherlock Holmes movie.

“It had something for everyone, which was great,” Martin said. “People liked the costumes and the sets were amazing, the special effects, the historical accuracy was very good. It had everything: mystery, drama, suspense, intrigue, a lot of action, and comedy. At the end, it did leave it wide open for a sequel, something to look forward to.” … Click here to view full article from the Vancouver Sun.

As an entertaining film, most Petrels rated it favourably, whereas, as a Sherlockian movie, it was rated slightly less.

Despite no less than three attempts by Moriarty to sabotage our pre-viewing of the film, once it began the action did not stop. It is a definite must-see-for-yourself movie!

Sherlock Holmes Movie Premiere

Ten Stormy Petrels will be attending an advanced screening of the new Sherlock Holmes Movie on December 21st.

The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, stars Robert Downey Jr. in the title role. Jude Law will portray Dr. Watson and Rachel McAdams will appear as “The Woman”.

Many thanks to our Petrel friend, Miss604, for the opportunity to view the movie before it is released to the general public on Christmas Day.
