Fran Martin became a member of The Bootmakers of Toronto in 1987 and The Stormy Petrels of B.C. in 1988. She has attended several Sherlockian conferences including: In 1992 "Aspects of Holmes" in Bradford, England (hosted by The Northern Musgraves); In 2006 "ACD at 35" in Toronto (hosted by The Bootmakers of Toronto); 2013 "Sherlock Holmes Through Time & and Place" in Minneapolis (hosted by The Norwegian Explorers); 2014 "Gillette to Brett IV" in Bloomington (hosted by Wessex Press); 2015 SherlockCon in Seattle; 2015 "A Scintillation of Scions VIII" in Baltimore (hosted by Watson's Tin Box); 2016 "The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes" (hosted by The Norwegian Explorers); in 2018 in Dayton, Ohio for the "Holmes, Doyle & Friends" conference (hosted by the Agra Treasurers). Fran has held several positions with The Stormy Petrels of B.C. including secretary, vice-president, special events coordinator and is currently president and editor of the "Petrel Flyer". She was honoured with being awarded the title of "Master Bootmaker" in 2014. She was very pleased to present a paper to a meeting of Sir Hugo's Companions in Chicago in 2017. Fran has contributed articles to Canadian Holmes magazine, the Watsonian and Chris Redmond's "About Sixty" and "Sherlock Holmes is Like...". In May, 2018 she attended the 78th annual Speckled Band of Boston dinner. She was very honoured to have been one of the first women invited.

MAY MEETING POSTPONED

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the May 5th meeting will take place at the regular time and place on June 2nd.

The next scheduled meeting of the Stormy Petrels of BC will take place at the usual meeting location, 7:00 pm, Tuesday, May 5th.

April 2009 Meeting and Discussion Questions

The next meeting of The Stormy Petrels will take place 7:00pm, April 7th.

Discussion Questions – “His Last Bow” (Petrel File # 50 for the April 7th Stormy Petrel Meeting)

  1. This account was penned in the third person. Who do you think wrote it? Why?
  2. Do you believe ‘Martha’ was Mrs. Hudson? Why or why not. And, if ‘Martha’ was Mrs. Hudson, wouldn’t Watson have registered some surprise at seeing her?
  3. Why did the British Government all this story to be published in 1917 while the war was still in progress?
  4. Why would there be a pigeon-hole marked “Fords”?
  5. Who do you think were the “Window-breaking Furies”?
  6. Do you think the English are a “…docile, simple folk…”? What do you think made von Bork think this way?
  7. All canonical illustrations aside, who do you think chloroformed von Bork?
  8. With von Bork’s arms and legs bound to his sides, how was he able to clutch at his throat or be walked out to the car?
  9. Holmes suggested that von Bork might be released after his visit to Schotland Yard. Does this make sense in light of all that Holmes had done to pass false information through von Bork?
  10. Would von Bork’s capture not arouse suspicion that the information which passed through him was untrustworthy? Would there have been some other way for Holmes to get at von Bork’s papers without tipping off the Germans that the game was up?
  11. Why was he not arrested for espionage? He was not named as an official member of the German legislation, or else his motives for being in England for four years would have come under suspicion.
  12. What do you believe was von Bork’s ultimate fate?
