  1. Further to my note of Oct 8th, I came across the following extract from “The Times” today.
“China’s Gangster “Godmother” Gets 18 Years
A woman in the southern Chinese city of Chongqing has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for heading an illegal gambling syndicate and overrunning the city with coordinated gang activity. Xie Caping, who is known as the “Godmother” and allegedly “kept a stable of at least 16 young men as her lovers,” was arrested today in one of China’s largest crackdowns on organized crime. So far, more than 1,544 people have been arrested, including Xie’s brother-in-law, longtime police chief Wen Qiang. According to officials, Xie was accused of running more than 20 illegal high-stakes casinos across the city, trafficking drugs, and paying off judicial officials. In a statement this morning, the Communist Party head in Chongqing condemned Xie’s activity, observing, “This kind of behaviour wouldn’t have been tolerated even under the Qing Dynasty.”
