Fran Martin became a member of The Bootmakers of Toronto in 1987 and The Stormy Petrels of B.C. in 1988. She has attended several Sherlockian conferences including: In 1992 "Aspects of Holmes" in Bradford, England (hosted by The Northern Musgraves); In 2006 "ACD at 35" in Toronto (hosted by The Bootmakers of Toronto); 2013 "Sherlock Holmes Through Time & and Place" in Minneapolis (hosted by The Norwegian Explorers); 2014 "Gillette to Brett IV" in Bloomington (hosted by Wessex Press); 2015 SherlockCon in Seattle; 2015 "A Scintillation of Scions VIII" in Baltimore (hosted by Watson's Tin Box); 2016 "The Misadventures of Sherlock Holmes" (hosted by The Norwegian Explorers); in 2018 in Dayton, Ohio for the "Holmes, Doyle & Friends" conference (hosted by the Agra Treasurers). Fran has held several positions with The Stormy Petrels of B.C. including secretary, vice-president, special events coordinator and is currently president and editor of the "Petrel Flyer". She was honoured with being awarded the title of "Master Bootmaker" in 2014. She was very pleased to present a paper to a meeting of Sir Hugo's Companions in Chicago in 2017. Fran has contributed articles to Canadian Holmes magazine, the Watsonian and Chris Redmond's "About Sixty" and "Sherlock Holmes is Like...". In May, 2018 she attended the 78th annual Speckled Band of Boston dinner. She was very honoured to have been one of the first women invited.

Your ‘Consulting Detective’ wishes all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year!

The next gathering of the Stormy Petrels will take place in honour of the birthday of Mr. Sherlock Holmes.

According to Mr. Christopher Morley, journalist, novelist and co-founder of the BSI, the actual date is January 6th, 18____.*

The Petrels will flock to The White Spot Restaurant at 1616 West Georgia Street (at Cardero) at 11:00 am on Saturday, January 8, 2011. It will be, as usual, an informal brunch.

* The first member or guest at the Birthday Brunch to correctly give me the answer to the year of birth shall be rewarded with a prize.

I am hoping to see many Petrels and Friends attending, as it is a great way to begin a new Sherlockian-filled year!

The Petrel Christmas Tree


Five orange pips,
A bicycle,
A photo of the Queen,
A Christmas goose,
A speckled band,
A tie-pin – emerald green

A coronet,
Some dancing men,
The devil-hound – ’tis true!
A fat cockroach,
An old clay pipe,
A carbuncle or two.

A deep-red ‘cardinal tosca’,
A magnifying glass,
A mazarine stone and mogul,
Pince-nez – gold, not brass.

A violin, a man’s lost thumb,
A big, fat honey-bee,
A silhouette and deerstalk’ cap
Atop our Petrel tree!

Our aim is to have every story in ‘the canon’ represented by an ornament on our tree.

Please bring an ornament for the tree to our festive gathering at Brown’s Books (East Hastings & Boundary) on December 7th.

NOVEMBER MEETING

She sits alone in a dark room, hiding behind a shroud of secrets. She finally pulls back the veil and the truth is revealled to Sherlock Holmes.

She says to Holems: “I know your character and methods too well, for I have followed your works for some years. Reading is the only pleasure which Fate has left me.”

The next meeting of The Stormy Petrels will take place on Tuesday, Novembeer 2 at 7:00 pm chez Wood.
The case for discyssion will be “The Adventure od the Veiled Lodger.”
