A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRIORY SCHOOLMASTER

We are on our last study session of STUD. Next on our list of cannonical contemplations will be SIGN.

We will be breaking the story up into two sessions. The first will be chapters 1 – 7. I will be giving you all a lession plan at the next meeting (Nov. 1 at Hampton Place).

Len has done a terrific job of presenting his favourite story, STUD. Having the lectures reproduced in the Petrel Flyer has given us the added advantage of being able to refer back to his lectures as we read the story.

I would like each of you to let me know what stories you would enjoy presenting so that I do not prepare them as well. SPEC is already spoken for.

Thank you,
Orilea M. “Gloria Scott”

On a side note: the correct link to the petition to award Jeremy Brett a posthumous BAFTA is: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/jbbafta3

only until October 31st.
Thanks, Monique

SHERLOCK HOLMES IN AMERICA

I am very excited to announce two upcoming Sherlockian conferences. One in Canada and one in USA.

The first, “A Study in Scandal” takes place in Toronto from October 13th to 16th. It is “A symposium on the oftentimes controversial life of Arthur Conan Doyle and the culture of Victorian scandal”

On the program are a variety of distinguished speakers, promising to make this conference very informative and entertaining.

The second, “From Gillette to Brett III” will take place in Indiana on Nover 11th to 13th.

This conference is “devoted to Sherlock Holmes on stage, screen, television and radio.” It will include the 35th anniversary screening of The Seven Percent solution hosted by Nicholas Meyer, who wrote both the book and the screenplay.

Speakers at this event will include:
Nicholas Meyer, Curtis Armstrong, Bert Coules, Tony Earnshaw, David Stuart Davies, Leslie Klinger, Kathryn White and Henry Zecher, who will present his Gillette slide program.

Both events are well worth attending, if possible. Two of our own Stormy Petrels have already registerd for the Toronto event.

If you would like more information on either conference regarding registration, fees, etc, please contact me, the Stormy Petrel Consulting Detective, at our g-mail address.

JULY 2012 SPECIAL EVENT

Shannon Falls - Source: Wikipedia

Shannon Falls is located just off Highway 99, 58 km north of Vancouver. BC. According to the BC Parks website, it is composed of a series of cliffs, rising 335 meters above Highway 99, making it the third highest falls in the province.

In 1792, Captain George Vancouver set up camp just west of the falls, which were named after Shannon who, in 1890 – 1900, owned the falls and surrounding area and used the clay deposits to make bricks. (you can’t make bricks without clay!)

The park also holds significant spiritual value to the Squamish First Nations, the first people to live in the area. They told of a two-headed sea serpent, Say-noth-ka, who lived in and around Howe Sound. According to legend, this beast travelled both on land and in the water. Some versions say it was Say-noth-ka who formed Shannon Falls by slithering and twisting his powerful body up the mountainside, wearing down a spillway for those cascading waters

We will, once again visit Shannon Falls, as our substitute for the Reichenbach Falls. The resemblance is truly uncanny!

We will meet at the park at 10:00 am on Saturday, July 14th. Please bring a lunch and your comfy hiking shoes, as we will walk up to the viewpoint located up a ” 350 meter long walking trail through a forest of Western hemlock, Douglas fir and Western red cedar along Shannon Creek.”

If you require any additional information, please contact your Consulting Detective at the g-mail address provided here.

Let us hope that the weather co-operates.
