February Meeting 2015

“I hear of Sherlock everywhere since you became his chronicler.” Words spoken by Sherlock Holmes’s older brother.

We, along with Dr. Watson, meet Mycroft Holmes for the first time in “The Greek Interpreter” which is the story for discussion for the meeting on February 3rd.  This story first appeared in the Strand Magazine in September 1893.

We, along with Dr. Watson, also learn that the grandmother of Sherlock Holmes was the sister of the French artist Vernet.

Holmes states: “Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest form.”

December 2014 Meeting

Sherlock Holmes to John Hector McFarlane: “…beyond obvious facts that you are a Freemason…” (Norwood Builder) Watson describing Mr. Baker: “…a dark man with gray-tinted glasses and a large Masonic pin projecting from his tie.” (Retired Colourman) Sherlock Holmes describing Jabez Wilson: “Beyond the obvious facts…that he is a Freemason…” (Red-Headed League)

Have you deduced the topic of December’s presentation paper? The Petrels are honored and pleased to have Mr. Dan Polvere BSI, speak about “Holmes and Freemasonry”.

Was Sherlock Holmes a Freemason? Was Doyle?

Find out more on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd. Time: 7:00 PM Venue: Hampton Place.

* Also note that our Sherlockian Petrel Tree will make an appearance once more, with additional Canonical-themed ornaments.

“The Resident Patient”

“The Resident Patient” first appeared in the Strand Magazine in August 1893. Doyle’s own medical background is most evident in this story.

Who is Dr. Watson describing? “He loved to lie in the very centre of five millions of people, with his filaments stretching out and running through them, responsive to every little rumor or suspicion of unsolved crime.”

What is the “thought-reading episode” and why does it appear in some editions, but not others?

What does it have to do with “The Adventure of the Cardboard Box”?

How does a Russian Count and his son figure into this case? Why Russian?

When Dr. Watson’s hand stole toward his own old wound, was it to his arm or leg?

“…your eyes fixed themselves upon your newly framed picture of General Gordon…..your eyes turned across to the unframed portrait of Henry Ward Beecher…”

The Stormy Petrels of BC will be discussing this story on Tuesday, Nov. 4th at 7:00 pm at Hampton Place.
Also, as an added treat, we will be pleased to welcome Daniel Polvere BSI (of Boston, Mass) to give a talk on “Holmes the Music Critic”

MEETING – OCTOBER 7, 2014

“The Crooked Man”

Unfortunate Colonel Barclay
Lay dead upon the floor.
Providence had killed him –
Bad conscience – nothing more!

Decades back in India,
Surrounded and left dry,
He’d sent a man to certain death
And did not bat an eye!

He took the ‘belle of Bhurtee’
And moved up in the ranks.
Ambition knew no boundaries.
To Wood he owed much thanks.

Although ’twas Wood, all stooped and bent,
Imagine, if you can,
Vindictive Colonel Barclay
Who was the ‘crooked man’!

Fran M.
1999

What were the events that led up to Henry Wood’s deformity?
Why did Mrs. Barclay accuse her husband of being a coward?
Why did Mrs. Barclay refer to her husband as ‘David’ although his name was James?
What was the importance of the missing key?
Who was Teddy?

Many more questions will be answered at the next meeting of The Stormy Petrels of BC as we discuss “The Crooked Man”

When: Tuesday, Oct. 7, 7:00 PM
Where: Hampton Place
