SAVE UNDERSHAW

According to David Charles Rose, the campaign to save Undershaw (ACD’s house in Hindhead) is gathering momentum.

Plans are afoot to develope this historic home into townhouses, but with the Save Undershaw Preservation Trust, hopefully Undershaw can be saved and turned into the Conan Doyle heritage and study centre.

The campaign does have a facebook page and you can also leave a message at: http://www.saveundershaw.com/2010/09/leave-your-feedback

(Thank you, Sheldon, for the heads-up on this one)

March Meeting

Petrels please note! Due to circumstanes beyond anyone’s control….the March meeting will take place on WEDNESDAY, March 2. Still at Peter & Audrey’s, still at 7:00 pm, and still looking at “The Retred Colouman”
We apologize for any inconvenience, but hope to still get a good turnout.

MARCH AND BEYOND

The February meeting was very informative, as many of the upcoming events for 2011 were laid out.

1. The adventure for discussion for the March meeting (to be held chez Wood at 7:00 pm, March 1) will be “The Retired Colourman” this is the final story in

    The Casebook

.

2. Please mark your calendars for our “Master’s Dinner”. This most prestigious event will take place on Saturday, March 19 at Bessborough Armories (bar opens at 6:00 pm). A wonderfully-catered affair featuring a five-course meal. This event has always proved to be a lively event full of Sherlockian fellowship and entertainment. The Petrel Players are sure to perform to perfection!

Please inform Fran if you wish to offer a toast, or if you have any further questions.

3. Besides our regular meeting in April (The story for discussion at this meeting will be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s well-known tale of “The Lost Special” ) a Classic Movie Night has also been scheduled for Friday, April 15 at UBC. Details will be announced at a later date.

Also scheduled for later this year: Our annual “Reichenbach Falls” picninc, our “Silver Blaze Race” a meeting at Sherlock’s Cafe in New Westminster and a “Sins of the City” tour hosted by the Vancouver Police Museum.

We are all looking forward to an exciting Holmes-filled year ahead. Please make plans to join us at any of our events. You can contact the Consulting Detective at our g-mail address.

Holmes says, in “The Retired Colourman” that “….is not all life pathetic and futile?” The Stormy Petrels would highly disagree!

FEBRUARY MEETING

Eighteen Petrels attended the annual Sherlock Holmes Birthday Brunch on January 8th and raised their glasses to “The Master” after President Fran read a little toast written in 2008:

“The Stormy Petrels gather here
on this auspicious day
to toast the wisest and the best who
brought us all this way.

To Sherlock Holmes we raise a glass
and honour him once more.
The head of his profession
on this and every shore!”

The next regular meeting of the Stormy Petrels will take place on Tuesday, February 1, 2011 chez Wood at 7:00 pm.

SH: “By the way, Watson, you know something of racing?”
Dr.W: “I ought to. I pay for it with half my wound pension.”

The case for discussion will be “The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place” the last of the 56 short stories. A rather dark tale of a family dog, burnt human bones and a crypt.
