CLASSIC MOVIE NIGHT

Mark your calendars for our 3rd Annual Sherlock Holmes Classic Movie Night.

When? Friday, April 15
Where? “The Tapestry” at UBC (16th/Westbrook)

SPBC member Brian has arranged for us to meet at 6:30 for pre-movie snacks and Petrel fellowship before we enjoy our feature presentation, “Study in Scarlet” (1968) starring Peter Cushing as Sherlock Holmes and Nigel Stock as Dr. Watson.

The movie will begin at 7:30, after a brief intro by our own SPBC “Priory Schoolmaster” Peter W., MBt, BSI.

This event is open to all. For more details, please contact the SPBC Consulting Detective.

If you wish to get a head start on May’s story, head over to the apocrypha once more to find “The Man with the Watches” another tale from Arthur Conan Doyl’s “Round the Fire Stories”

Additional May meeting details will be posted at a later date.

MARCH AND BEYOND

The February meeting was very informative, as many of the upcoming events for 2011 were laid out.

1. The adventure for discussion for the March meeting (to be held chez Wood at 7:00 pm, March 1) will be “The Retired Colourman” this is the final story in

    The Casebook

.

2. Please mark your calendars for our “Master’s Dinner”. This most prestigious event will take place on Saturday, March 19 at Bessborough Armories (bar opens at 6:00 pm). A wonderfully-catered affair featuring a five-course meal. This event has always proved to be a lively event full of Sherlockian fellowship and entertainment. The Petrel Players are sure to perform to perfection!

Please inform Fran if you wish to offer a toast, or if you have any further questions.

3. Besides our regular meeting in April (The story for discussion at this meeting will be Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s well-known tale of “The Lost Special” ) a Classic Movie Night has also been scheduled for Friday, April 15 at UBC. Details will be announced at a later date.

Also scheduled for later this year: Our annual “Reichenbach Falls” picninc, our “Silver Blaze Race” a meeting at Sherlock’s Cafe in New Westminster and a “Sins of the City” tour hosted by the Vancouver Police Museum.

We are all looking forward to an exciting Holmes-filled year ahead. Please make plans to join us at any of our events. You can contact the Consulting Detective at our g-mail address.

Holmes says, in “The Retired Colourman” that “….is not all life pathetic and futile?” The Stormy Petrels would highly disagree!

The Petrel Christmas Tree

Five orange pips,
A bicycle,
A photo of the Queen,
A Christmas goose,
A speckled band,
A tie-pin – emerald green

A coronet,
Some dancing men,
The devil-hound – ’tis true!
A fat cockroach,
An old clay pipe,
A carbuncle or two.

A deep-red ‘cardinal tosca’,
A magnifying glass,
A mazarine stone and mogul,
Pince-nez – gold, not brass.

A violin, a man’s lost thumb,
A big, fat honey-bee,
A silhouette and deerstalk’ cap
Atop our Petrel tree!

Our aim is to have every story in ‘the canon’ represented by an ornament on our tree.

Please bring an ornament for the tree to our festive gathering at Brown’s Books (East Hastings & Boundary) on December 7th.
